Women's Hoops Upends Concordia Wisconsin on the Road

MEQUON, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team returned to action following a two-week layoff by picking up a 58-47 road victory over Concordia University Wisconsin to win a matchup of conference unbeatens.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine set the tone of the game early by scoring the first eight points of the contest, four of which came from Nicole Botich
• The final points of a low-scoring quarter came on a basket from DeKayla Crayton in the final minute to hand Benedictine a 12-6 advantage
• Concordia Wisconsin cut the lead to two points at 16-14 midway through the second, but Benedictine was able to twice push the margin to seven points and hold a 24-19 lead at the break
• The hosts were able to even the score halfway through the third quarter at 30-30, but a quick three-pointer from Venita Parsons put Benedictine back in front
• Concordia Wisconsin took a brief 39-38 lead early in the fourth quarter before Casey Williams made a layup to put Benedictine ahead for good with 7:04 to play
• Benedictine made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to close out the victory
• Head coach Charlie Averkamp, in his first year, came to Benedictine after serving as an assistant at Concordia Wisconsin

FROM THE COACH
"This was a very big road win against a very good Concordia Wisconsin team," head coach Charlie Averkamp said. "They were able to outrebound us and get to a lot of the 50/50 balls, but we made some big plays down the stretch including a huge three-pointer from Payton Sims and a huge post move from Briana Hamilton. Alanna Ferry and Raven Willis did a great job hitting free throws down the stretch to seal the win."

Botich and Willis each finished with 12 points to pace Benedictine with Botich adding nine boards
• Sims came off the bench to score 10 points in 19 minutes of action
• Crayton grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds
• Benedictine limited Concordia Wisconsin to just 16.6 percent shooting in the first half and 25 percent for the game
• Concordia Wisconsin held a 49-44 advantage on the glass

UP NEXT
Benedictine (9-2, 6-0) hosts Dominican University on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the first home game in almost a month
