Softball Wins Season Opener

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Benedictine University softball team opened up the 2016 season during their annual Florida trip, defeating SUNY Geneseo in their season opener 4-2. The Eagles would go on to lose the second game of the day, 5-6, against Framingham State.

THE DETAILS
• The Eagles trailed after the second inning, allowing SUNY Geneseo to take a 1-0 lead. Benedictine would retaliate, scoring a solo run in the top of the third when Liz Jimenez crossed the plate
• After Geneseo scored another run in the fifth, Benedictine tallied a three-run sixth inning that included hits from Jenna Boyajian, Holly Haberkorn, Selena Kweder and a double from Melissa Stoch to take the 4-2 lead.
• The Eagles held Geneseo scoreless in the final frame to pick up the win

STAT LEADERS
• Boyajian was 1-3 with a stolen base while Stoch collected a run and an RBI
• At the plate, Haberkorn was 1-2 with one run and an RBI. On the mound, she allowed 11 hits, one walk and had two strikeouts

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine led 5-1 heading into the seventh inning but allowed Framingham to score five runs on four errors and four hits
• After Framingham scored a run in the first inning, Benedictine tied it up in the second when Kailee Cable singled then advanced on a stolen base and a wild pitch. She scored on a Breanna Sobotka single to center field
• The Eagles combined for four runs in the fifth and sixth innings that saw Courtney Grasz, Boyajian, Stoch and Haberkorn tally hits

STAT LEADERS
• Grasz was 2-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI while Stoch was a perfect 3-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored
• Cable had two hits, a run scored and a stolen base
• On the mound, Melissa Guzior completed 6.2 innings and allowed six hits and two walks but allowed zero earned runs

UP NEXT
Benedictine softball, now 1-1 overall, take on Plymouth State at 8:00 am CST followed by a 12:00 pm CST game against Salve Regina.
