Eagles Sweep Dominican, Third Seed in NACC Tourney

The Benedictine University softball team swept Dominican University to earn the #3 seed in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 5 at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

THE FINAL

THE SCORING DETAILS
• The first game began at Dominican and saw Shannon Fritsche put BenU up 1-0 in the first after she stole home
• Dominican tied it up in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run on one hit
• In the third inning, Courtney Grasz and Jenna Boyajian reached base before the game was halted due to rain. When play resumed, Holly Haberkorn sent a rocket over the center field fence that scored three runs and put the Eagles up 4-1
• The game was suspended heading into the fourth inning and began again on Sunday at Benedictine
• Angie Malsack tallied an RBI after she was hit by a pitch in the fifth
• Benedictine advanced their lead in the sixth with a Kailee Cable sac fly
• Dominican threatened in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a solo homerun, but it wasn't enough as BenU went on to win 6-2
 
THE STATS
• Grasz was 2-4 with a run
• At the plate, Haberkorn was 2-3 with three RBI
• Haberkorn, now 14-6 overall, allowed six hits with three strikeouts

THE SCORING DETAILS
• After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles took the lead with RBI singles from Fritsche and Grasz
• The Stars retaliated in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs of their own off of three hits
• After a solo homerun in the third, Dominican took a 4-2 lead after they scored another run in the fifth
• The Benedictine offense came alive in the sixth, tallying five runs off of six hits including a three-RBI double from Fritsche to take the 7-4 lead
• The Eagles secured the 9-4 win in the seventh when they tallied two more runs off of three hits from Kassee Johnson, Fritsche and Grasz
 
THE STATS
• Fritsche was 4-5 with four RBI
• Grasz was a perfect 5-5 with three RBI
• Haberkorn and Kelli Holstine each had two hits and combined for four RBI
• Johnson was 3-4 with three runs scored
• Melissa Guzior, now 13-7, allowed 10 hits with three earned runs and three strikeouts
 
UP NEXT
The Benedictine softball team ended the regular season with a 27-13 overall record and a 17-6 NACC mark. The Eagles enter the conference tournament as the #3 seed and will take on the #6 seed Concordia University-Chicago on Thursday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
