Eagles Fall in NCAA Super Regional

The Benedictine University softball season came to end in the third game of the NCAA Super Regional after a 3-1 loss to Emory University.

THE DETAILS
• Second Inning: Emory took a 1-0 lead with a solo homerun to left field
• In the bottom of the frame Benedictine threatened with one out, they left two runners stranded
• Third Inning: Courtney Grasz doubled and a Melissa Stoch single put runners on the corners but the EU defense again stopped a run from scoring
• Fourth Inning: A single and a stolen base put an Emory runner on second. A single and a BenU throwing error scored a run, giving EU a 2-0 lead
• Fifth Inning: Shannon Fritche led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field to cut BenU's deficit in half.
• Seventh Inning: A BenU error put a runner on second and she advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A sac fly scored her, putting Emory up 3-1
• With the game on the line in the bottom of the inning, Fritsche reached base on an Emory error. The EU defense was too much as they went on to win 3-1
 
THE STATS
• Fritsche, Grasz, Stoch and Sobotka each tallied hits
• Holly Haberkorn only gave up four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts
 
FROM THE COACH
"I am so proud of how far this team has come," said head coach Kate Heidkamp. "They played their hearts out and left it all on the field. I am going to miss our seniors and the leadership they have provided all season."
