Men's Soccer Opens With Shutout

LISLE, IL - The Benedictine University men's soccer teams kicked off the 2016 season and a new era with a 2-0 win over Lake Forest College at home on Thursday night.

FINAL SCORE
Benedictine 2, Lake Forest 0

THE DETAILS
•
Both goals came in the second half of action
• Benedictine dictated the pace but could not break through in the opening 45
• The first opportunity of the second half produced success as Nick Kapetanos converted on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to give Benedictine a 1-0 lead
• Just over 10 minutes later a second opportunity presented itself and Aldreiron Smith poked home a feed from Kapetanos to push the margin to 2-0
• The goal marked the first in the career for Smith and came on his only shot of the night
• Benedictine controlled possession in the second and limited the chances for Lake Forest to notch a win over a team that was picked to finish second in the Midwest Conference and reached the NCAA Tournament last season

FROM THE COACH
"Lake Forest is always a dangerous team in the attacking phase of the game," head coach Attila Schmidt said. "It was nice to see our guys limit them to only three shots on the night."

STAT LEADERS
• Benedictine held an 11-3 advantage in shots, holding a margin of 8-2 in the first half
• Kapetanos tallied six shots with a goal and an assist
• Santiago Beltran picked up a pair of shots in the blank sheet
• Antonio Marti-Polo stopped the only shot that Lake Forest put on goal
• The victory marked the first for head coach Attila Schmidt in his first contest as a head coach
