Volleyball Splits at Elmhurst Tournament

The Benedictine University women's volleyball team opened up the 2016 slate at the Elmhurst College Fall Invite, splitting two matches on Friday night. The Eagles defeated North Park University in five sets before falling to Bluffton University.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine came out on fire in set one, tallying an 11-1 lead on 10 straight serves from Emily Chitwood
• North Park chipped away at the BenU lead but the Eagle offense was too much, tallying nine kills for a .348 hitting percentage
•The Eagles trailed 7-3 to start the second set and could never recover, falling 25-21
• Despite a 4-0 deficit in the third set, Benedictine rallied and tied the game at 21
• Both teams battled back and forth until Benedictine won 28-26 on a Keriann Groen kill
• After losing the fourth set 25-21, BenU took a monster 9-5 lead in the fifth set with a Claudia Schmidt kill
• The Vikings would not go down quietly, tying the match at nine. However, a Chitwood kill gave the Eagles the lead and they never looked back, winning 15-9
 
STAT LEADERS
• Schmidt led all Eagles with 10 kills while Groen and Kara Epping each had nine kills
• Groen and Epping combined for 15 block assists
• Chitwood tallied seven kills and 14 digs while Kelcey Adams had 23 assists and 10 digs
• Kristina Billie led the team with 21 digs
 
BLUFFTON

THE DETAILS
• Trailing 7-4 in the first set, Bluffton formed a 9-1 run to take a 16-5 advantage and went on to win 25-16
• In the second set, Bluffton took another early lead but the Eagles tied the game at 19 with back-to-back Billie aces
• The Bluffton offense was too much as they went on to win 25-19
• Benedictine started off slow in the third set but quickly tied it at seven. The teams traded points until Bluffton pulled away with a five-point lead and would go on to win 25-21
 
STAT LEADERS
• Groen led BenU with eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage
• Epping and Schmidt each had five kills with Alyssa O'Boyle led with 13 assists and also had six digs
• Billie tallied 16 digs
 
UP NEXT
Benedictine women's volleyball continues play in the Elmhurst Tournament on Saturday, September 3 when they take on Greenville College at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. match against Gustavus Adolphus College.
