Volleyball Drops Two

The Benedictine University women's volleyball team ended their opening weekend with a 1-3 overall record. After splitting their opening matches on Friday night, the Eagles fell to Greenville College and Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon.

THE DETAILS
• Despite and early 4-2 lead in the first set, Benedictine trailed for the remainder of the set, falling 25-17
• In the second set, BenU trailed early but a Kristina Billie ace put the Eagles within one
• Benedictine took a 20-19 lead on a Claudia Schmidt ace and never looked back, winning 25-22
• Billie's strong serves kept Benedictine going in the third set, rallying back from down 15-11 and going on to win 25-23
• In the fourth set the Eagles trailed early and could never find their offensive rhythm, falling 25-12
• Greenville took a 6-2 lead in the final and fifth set en route to a 15-7 win
• The Eagles struggled on serve receive, making 13 errors
 
STAT LEADERS
• Emily Chitwood tallied nine kills
• Kelcey Adams recorded 19 assists and 12 digs
• Billie had a team high 19 digs and four aces
• Keriann Groen and Kara Epping each had seven kills

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine continued their serve receive woes in the first set, tallying three early on to trail 9-4
• The Eagles rallied and came within two, 20-18, but the GAC offense was too much, tallying 11 kills for the 25-21 win
• The Eagles went down 2-0 after a 25-17 second set loss
• In the third set, BenU went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead and never look back, winning 21-15
• The fourth set saw a 5-5 tie early on but Gustavus pulled ahead, tallying 17 kills for a .333 hitting percentage, winning 25-20
 
STAT LEADERS
• Erin Wiegand led the Eagles with 13 kills
• Epping and Groen combined for 22 kills, both hitting over .360 in the match
• Billie led all players with 16 digs while Colleen Corbett recorded 12 digs
• Adams had 33 assists and 12 digs

Benedictine women's volleyball travels to Eureka College on Wednesday, September 7 for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match.
