Men's Volleyball Splits at Home

Despite falling to Mount St. Joseph in five sets on Saturday afternoon, the Benedictine University men's volleyball team bounced back to defeat North Central College in straight sets in the nightcap.

THE DETAILS
• The Eagles were the first to ten in set one after back to back Nick Malak kills
• Malak would tally six kills and no errors in the first set
• Benedictine would win the set on four straight MSJ errors
• In the second set, BenU took a 17-11 lead but let the Lions go on a 3-0 run to come within three
• MSJ would threaten down the stretch but Benedictine would go on to win the set 25-23
• Two Zach Loeding kills gave BenU a 10-8 lead in the third set
• Up 24-19, the Eagles allowed MSJ to go on a 7-0 run to take the 26-24 win
• Benedictine crumbled in the fourth set, tallying just eight kills and hitting -.040 while MSJ crushed 13 kills and had a .632 hitting percentage
• Down early in the fifth set the Eagles tied it at 11 on a Joe Lock solo block to give BenU some momentum
• A Lewis Stein kill would give the Eagles their first lead of the set
• The Mount St. Joseph defense was too much to handle as they would go on to win 15-13

THE DETAILS
• Despite trailing early in the first set, Benedictine tied it at 11 and never looked back, winning the set on a Stein solo block and holding the Cardinals to just seven kilsl and a -.033 hitting percentage
• The second set was a rollercoaster from the first point, with both teams trading points and the lead the entire set
• Tied at 24, the teams continued to trade points until a Loeding kill put BenU up and North Central gave the Eagles the win with a hitting error
• Benedictine trailed most of the third set until several NCC errors tied it at 22
• Down to the wire, both teams battled but a Sterling Glover kill secured the BenU victory

"Our team has to keep battling," said head coach Dan Buehring. "If we do that we can start pulling out some more victories. It was nice to get a win to end the day."

The Eagles travel to Michigan next weekend to take on Olivet College and Adrian College on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18.
