Baseball Splits Home Opener

LISLE, IL - The Benedictine University baseball team received some quality starting pitching in a doubleheader split with Lakeland to open the home schedule.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine created plenty of opportunities in the opener but left 12 on the bases in dropping a second straight one-run decision
• Benedictine had baserunners in all but one inning
• Lakeland scored all three runs in the top of the fourth after Benedictine left the bases loaded in the third
• The runs came on just three hits, one of which was a bunt single, with a pair of walks sprinkled in
• Benedictine was able to respond with a run in the bottom of the frame
• Tanner Kiser led off the inning with a single and scored on an error with the bases loaded as Jimmy McLaughlin drove him home
• Dom DeMicco singled home Sam Kerr in the seventh, but Benedictine again left the bases loaded, squandering a chance to tie or take the lead
• Game two saw Lakeland score first in the top of the third
• Benedictine came back with four runs in the bottom of the third to lead for the first time in the doubleheader
• Marco D'Angelo opened the third with a double to deep center
• Nick Severino tied the game with a single and moved up on the throw
• McLaughlin put Benedictine in front with an RBI single
• Stirbis doubled home a run and DeMicco plated the final run with an RBI groundout
• Severino padded the lead with a safety squeeze bunt in the fourth
• Leading 5-2, Benedictine extended the lead with two runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Severino and a McLaughlin double

STAT LEADERS
• Joe Palasiewicz took the hard luck loss in the opener, working seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts
• Frank Meisl threw the final two innings
• Benedictine banged out 13 hits in the opener
• Chayancze Stirbis finished with four hits while Erik Callaghan added three
• Ryan Miller earned his first career win by throwing six innings and allowing just a single earned run in his first home collegiate outing
• Jacob Trumpis, Drake Berman and Marty Maves combined to close out the victory
• McLaughlin and Callaghan posted two hits in the second contest as Benedictine finished with nine
• Severino drove home three runs with McLaughlin adding two
