Men's Volleyball Falls In NACC Championship

Competing in the first-ever Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship, the Benedictine University men's volleyball team entered the tournament as the #2 seed and traveled to #1 Dominican University on Saturday night. The Eagles came from behind but fell in five sets to the Stars.

• Benedictine got off to a hot start, taking a 4-0 lead in the first set
• The Dominican offense rallied to take a 16-14 lead
• A Markus Riemer ace tied it at 17 but DU pulled away to take a 24-20 lead
• The Eagles held on for two more points but the Stars took home the 25-22 set one victory
• Dominican hit .321 in the set with 13 kills while BenU had 12 kills but seven errors for a .167 attack percentage
• In another intense set, BenU took a 14-9 lead in set two after a Zach Loeding solo block
• A Kyle VanStedum block put the Eagles up 17-11, ending in a Dominican timeout
• VanStedum kept the rally going with an ace to make it 19-13
• The Stars didn't go away though, tallying two straight but Elijah Medlock and the BenU offense was too much, evening up the match at one a piece with the 25-17 win
• Benedictine recorded 12 kills with just three kills in set two while holding DU to a .118 attack percentage
• In the third set, the Eagles trailed early but rallied back to within one, 13-14, on a Medlock kill
• Medlock tied the game at 19 but the Stars took a 24-20 lead
• Back-to-back Loeding kills kept the Eagles in the game but it wasn't enough as DU would win 25-23
• Despite tallying 16 kills over DUs 15, the Eagles tallied 5 errors compared to DU's three
• In set three, Adriel Rivas tallied back-to-back kills to give Benedictine a 5-1 lead
• The Eagles held the lead throughout the first half but the Stars would go on to rally and collet four straight to tie it at 12
• Benedictine responded with four straight of their own to take a 16-12 lead
• Several BenU errors allowed Dominican to tie it at 20
• Both teams traded points down the stretch and a DU service error gave BenU set point
• The Eagles evened the match at two sets each after a DU attack error for the 26-24 win
• Dominican took a 4-2 lead after three straight blocks
• The Stars added to their lead with an ace but a Medlock kill stopped the DU rally
• The Dominican offense would not quit, as they notched two straight kills and two aces for a 12-4 lead
• Benedictine tallied two straight but it wasn't enough as Dominican would go on to win 15-6

Benedictine men's volleyball, now 21-6, earned a share of the NACC regular season title. The rest of the season is still unknown, with Benedictine possibly earning an at-large bid into the NCAA DIII Men's Volleyball Championship. The selection show will be on Monday at 9:00 a.m.
