#14 Men's Volleyball Downs #6 NYU

The #14 Benedictine University men's volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a five-set win over #6 New York University in the Rice Center on Saturday afternoon.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine tallied six service errors in the first set and could only muster eight kills in the 25-22 loss
• Despite NYU taking a 10-5 lead in the second set, BenU rallied to take their first lead of the set, 18-17, after a Kyle VanStedum and Joe Lock block
• Several NYU errors allowed the Eagles to take an even bigger lead and win 25-21
• A close third set saw the Eagles tally 12 kills but the Violets barely out-hit BenU with 13 kills for the 25-23 win
• In the fourth set, Benedictine found their rhythm
• Elijah Medlock tallied six straight points to give Benedictine an 11-5 lead
• Benedictine hit .304 in the set with 10 kills, forcing a fifth set with the 15-12 win
• Set five was all BenU after a Lock solo block put the Eagles up 7-4 and they never looked back, winning 15-8
• As a team, BenU tallied 44 kills, 33 digs and 11 blocks while NYU collected 49 kills, 32 digs and five blocks
• In his Benedictine debut, freshman Chase Olson tallied four block assists and two solo blocks

FROM THE COACH
"It wasn't pretty but we worked hard for this win," said head coach Dan Buehring. "NYU played great and it wasn't pretty on our end but we worked hard to come out on top."
 
UP NEXT
Benedictine men's volleyball will host #11 Stevenson University at 12:00 p.m. in the Rice Center on Sunday, followed by a 5:00 p.m. match against Augustana.
