The Benedictine University football team piled up over 500 yards including more than 300 on the ground in a 34-24 road win over Wisconsin Lutheran.
Benedictine opened the game by receiving the kickoff and utilizing an 11-play drive to open a 3-0 lead when Liam McCarty booted a 22-yard field goal. Wisconsin Lutheran responded by marching down the field and taking their lone lead of the game in a busy first quarter, grabbing a 7-3 lead late in the opening 15 minutes.
The teams traded turnovers in the second quarter.
Johnny Camillo recovered a fumble to set the stage for a
Dylan Sigel 15-yard touchdown to put Benedictine ahead 10-7 early in the second. Sigel found the endzone again after a punt, marching in from 16 yards to push the lead to 17-7 with 5:58 left in the first half. Benedictine countered another punt with a 13-play drive to stretch the advantage to 24-7 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from
Evan Wydajewski to
Nick Shelton, who had a huge game.
Following a slow start to the third, Wisconsin Lutheran was able to pull within 24-14 with 4:03 to go in the quarter. Shelton snared a 38-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter to make the score 31-14. Wisconsin Lutheran knocked in a field goal to pull within 31-27. McCarthy drained another field goal with 2:52 left to make the score 34-17. Two pass plays put the hosts on the board again at 34-24, but Benedictine was able to run out the clock and hold on for the win.
Benedictine finished with 556 yards.
Blake Shoddie and
Gregory Hoard both amassed over 100 yards on the ground with Hoard running for 111 and Shoddie 106. Sigel tacked one 84 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Shelton caught nine passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Wydajewski threw for 246 yards, completing 14-of-19 attempts.
Ralph Clark led the defense with nine tackles.
Brian Pritt added two more sacks following his record setting game last week.
Benedictine (4-3, 4-2 NACC) plays at home for the final time next Saturday against Eureka.
