The Benedictine University men's basketball won a second straight conference game by surpassing Lakeland 98-84 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Lakeland scored the first three points and led for the bulk of the opening portion of the first 20 minutes.
Tanner Resch made a layup with 9:29 to go in the half that put Benedictine ahead for good at 27-26. The basket was the opening of an 8-0 run that put Benedictine in front 36-28. Benedictine went on to lead by as many as 15 in the first and held a 48-37 lead at the intermission. The advantage grew to 18 points midway through the second on a pair of free throws from
Dominick Ciegotura. Lakeland cut the lead to 11 with eight minutes remaining but could get no closer.
Resch led all scorers with 24 points, 14 of which came at the free throw line as Benedictine finished 32-40 at the stripe. Pat Mayfield tacked on 22, making 7-of-9 attempts from the field including 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
Noah Mason contributed 13 and led the team with seven boards. Ciegotura tacked on 12. Benedictine held a 40-29 advantage on the glass, logging 48 points in the paint. Benedictine shot 56 percent in the first half and 54 percent for the game.
Benedictine (3-6, 2-2 NACC) plays at Parkside in an exhibition on Wednesday before returning home to meet Augustana in non-conference action next Saturday.
