Women's Hoops Claims Third Straight

The Benedictine University women's basketball team held off a feisty Rockford squad to record a 63-59 win on the road Wednesday night in conference play.

The first points of the contest did not come until over two minutes had passed. Benedictine tallied the first four on buckets from Alexis Schueler and Megan Duzansky. The remainder of the opening 10 minutes was tight and after Rockford took the lead with 12 seconds remaining, Makenzie Carroll put home a layup to hand Benedictine a 14-13 lead after one. Benedictine led by as many as seven in the second following a pair of free throws from Allison Jarvis but held just a 28-26 lead at the break. The first portion of the second half was back-and-forth until Carroll scored four straight as part of a 6-0 run to put Benedictine in front 36-31. The lead hit double digits but Rockford drew within five, 46-41, after three. The hosts did not go away in the fourth, tying the game a 49 with 7:04 left but Benedictine was able to stave off the comeback after quickly answering with five in a row.

Benedictine scored 36 points in the paint and 20 off turnovers. The team finished the night shooting 34.9 percent. Jarvis led all scorers with 19. Carroll tacked on 11 while Hailey Bachmann finished with eight and 11 rebounds. Benedictine held a 42-40 edge on the glass.

Benedictine (14-10, 10-5) hosts Aurora on Saturday in a game to determine home court in the opening round of the conference tournament.
