The Benedictine University football team moved to 2-0 on the season by holding off a late surge by visiting Loras to tally a 20-13 decision.
Benedictine did not trail in the contest.
Jack Moses connected with
Alex Siebens on a 36-yard play to set up the first score.
Marcus Woods reeled in a 16-yard touchdown to put Benedictine ahead 6-0 with 6:59 remaining in the opening quarter. The lead reached 130 by taking advantage of a short field in the second quarter. Dino Stephens scooted into the endzone from 20 yards out with 4:53 left in the half. Loras responded with a quick drive to battle within 13-6 before the half.
The defense forced a three-and-out to open the second half and the offense responded by making the score 20-6 when
Negil Bruce plunged in from two yards away. Loras used a long drive late in the fourth to pull within the final score. The guests blocked a field goal in the closing seconds and had two attempts at a hail mary but Benedictine was able to hold on.
Benedictine held the ball for 36:59 of the game and finished with 303 yards. Moses finished 17-26 for 168 yards and a touchdown. Stephens carried the ball 23 times for 134 yards, helping keep the chains moving.
Tristan Weglarz finished with four catches. Siebens totaled 67 yards receiving on three catches. Nine different players caught passes.
Jack Hayden,
Jake Diamantos and John THompson all finished with eight tackles. Diamantos recorded an interception. Hayden finished with 2.5 sacks.
Benedictine (2-0) opens conference play at Aurora next week.Â
