The Benedictine University football team hit the road for a second consecutive week and suffered a 28-20 loss in double overtime to Concordia Wisconsin.
The game was slow developing to start with both teams putting together long drives in the opening quarter only to stall deep on the opponent side. Concordia Wisconsin opened the scoring early in the second quarter, taking a 7-0 lead. Benedictine countered with another long drive but had a field goal attempt blocked.
Jake Diamantos recorded an interception just before halftime to set Benedictine up with a short field after a 31-yard return. Jason Moore reeled in a 15-yard touchdown from
Jack Moses as the zeroes showed to close the half with the tying score. Â
Benedictine was again stopped on the Concordia Wisconsin side on the opening drive of the second half but the defense quickly forced a three-and-out. Negil Brice handed Benedictine their first lead of the contest with a five-yard score to make the score 13-7 with 3:31 to go in the third. The hosts responded with another long drive to even the score at 13-13 with 12:33 to play. Both defenses came up with stops following long possessions to send the game to overtime.
Benedictine opened overtime with the ball and needed just three plays to open a 20-13 lead when
Tristan Weglarz snared a 23-yard pass from Moses. Concordia Wisconsin quickly tied the game and opened the second overtime with the ball, scoring a touchdown and adding a two-point conversion to lead 28-20. Benedictine drove to the nine-yardline before a fourth down pass into the endzone fell incomplete.
The stats were near identical in the game with Concordia Wisconsin holding a 347-306 edge in total yards. Benedictine held the ball for 35:26 of the contest. Benedictine recorded 163 yards on the ground and 143 through the air. Moses completed 18-of-27 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Dino Stephens ran for 91 yards on 21 carries while Bruce ran for 44 yards on nine attempts. Eight different receivers caught passes.
John Thompson recorded 13 tackles to lead the defense while Diamatos posted 11 stops with an interception and a block.
Jack Hayden recorded 2.5 tackles for loss with a forced fumble while
Jose Barragan tallied 1.5 sacks.Â
Benedictine (3-1, 1-1 NACC) hosts Rockford next week in the homecoming contest.
