The Benedictine University football team accumulated 184 yards on the ground and used a late interception to pull away from Wisconsin Lutheran and notch a 27-13 win on the road Saturday night.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored the only points of the first quarter by using a six-minute drive to begin the game and open a 7-0 edge. Dino Stephens scored just over a minute into the second quarter on a 13-yard run to even the score.Â
The game went into the half tied but Benedictine didn't need long to lead for the first time, scoring on the opening drive of the second half.
Tristan Weglarz caught a 24-yard touchdown from
Marcus Martin to make the score 14-7 at the 11:18 mark of the third. Grinding out a long drive, Stephens flipped a touchdown pass to Jason Moore to extend the lead to 20-7. With 10:14 left in the game, the hosts drew within 20-13. Wisconsin Lutheran had the ball with just under three minutes to play but
Dawson Piper ended the comeback attempt by returning an interception 10 yards to seal the win.
Benedictine held Wisconsin Lutheran to just over 200 yards in the win. Stephens put together another monster game with 159 yards rushing on 33 attempts to go with a touchdown and a passing TD. Martin threw for 122 yards and a touchdown.
Jake Diamantos led the defense with nine stops. Piper added seven.
Benedictine (5-0, 3-0 NACC) returns home next Saturday to meet St. Norbert.
