McAvoy joined the Benedictine staff as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in the winter of 2018 after serving two years in the same role at St. Norbert College.

St. Norbert averaged over 30 points per game in his two years including 39.6 during the 2016 campaign. St. Norbert played in the Midwest Conference championship game in 2017 and played Benedictine in the non-conference schedule in each season. McAvoy directed a balanced offense that featured multiple looks in both the running and passing scheme. The Chicago area native also recruited Chicagoland.

Prior to St. Norbert, McAvoy spent two seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, finishing as the offensive coordinator while serving as the Illinois recruiting coordinator.

McAvoy began his coaching career at his alma mater, Northern Illinois University, working with the tight ends and offensive line as a graduate assistant. Northern Illinois played in the Orange Bowl following the 2012 season and won the MAC West title in 2013.

As a player at Northern Illinois, McAvoy played fullback and appeared in two bowl games. Between coaching and playing, McAvoy has been a part of six bowl games. McAvoy graduated with a bachelor's degree in business marketing and added a master's in sports management.

A Cary, Ill. native, McAvoy played three sports at St. Viator High School.
