MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – The Benedictine University women’s basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Wisconsin Lutheran team on the road Wednesday, falling to the Warriors 73-70.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-7, conference-best 7-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference South division) shot a blazing 54 percent on the night and had five players in double figures led by Whitney Miller’s team-high 18 points.
The back-and-forth game saw the teams trading the lead seven times. Benedictine (5-9, 3-6 in NAC) held a lead as late as the 8:42 mark in the second half when a three-point play from
Colleen Forkin gave Benedictine a one-point advantage.
Wisconsin Lutheran took a five-point lead with an 8-2 run topped off by a Krissy Day three-pointer.
A
Karyn Conerty three-pointer with just 15 seconds left cut the Benedictine deficit to two. Forced to foul, Benedictine watched Shavon Dillon hit 1-of-2 free throws giving Wisconsin Lutheran a 73-70 advantage with just 11 seconds left.
With a chance for just one more play,
Monika Krozel launched a shot from beyond the arc. But the shot was blocked by Rachel Johnson.
Benedictine held a decided advantage in both second chance points (15-7) and points off turnovers (21-11). Led by
Lidia Arias’ game-high six steals, Benedictine generated 23 Wisconsin Lutheran turnovers.
Benedictine had three players in double-figures including a game-high 21 points from
Jenn Bren. Conerty had 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting while
Tracey Walsh picked up 14 of her own.
The Lady Eagles return to action January 26 when they host rival Aurora University at the Rice Center. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
