LISLE, Illinois – Looking to repeat the men’s successful win over rival Aurora a week earlier, the Benedictine women followed suit Tuesday by defeating the Spartans 60-55 in Lisle.
Benedictine (6-9, 4-6 in Northern Athletics Conference) played inspired basketball all night, never trailing by more than six and leading the entire second half.
The turning point of Tuesday’s game came with a little over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
A
Jenn Bren layup cut the Aurora (5-12, 4-8 NAC) advantage to two points. Bren finished Tuesday with a double double, 10 points and 14 rebounds.
On the next Eagles’ possession,
Karyn Conerty’s spot-up three-pointer put Benedictine ahead for the first time since the opening minute of the game.
From that point on, Benedictine allowed Aurora only one more lead, a one-point advantage in the waning minutes of the first half.
Although Aurora cut the lead to one point with just 1:48 left in the game, solid free-throw shooting by
Colleen Forkin (10 points, 3 assists) sealed the five-point victory for Benedictine.
Bren and Forkin tied for a team-high 10 points, while Conerty poured in nine of her own.
Monika Krozel added eight points and six rebounds, while
Sam Hathaway chipped in seven points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Benedictine returns to action with home games Thursday against Dominican University (7:00 p.m.) and again Saturday against Rockford (2:00 p.m.).
