Eagles Rush to Victory

Football Rolls Up 323 Rushing Yards

The Benedictine University football team remains alone atop the Northern Athletics Conference standings following a 49-14 victory over Maranatha which featured 323 yards rushing.

The Eagles scored on their first five possessions of the game, putting together an eight-play drive on the first offensive possession of the game after forcing Maranatha into a three and out, opening a 7-0 lead when John Borsellino recorded the first of five rushing touchdowns in the contest, scoring from two yards out with 9:09 to play in the opening quarter.



Another three and out enabled Benedictine to take a 14-0 lead as Preston Earl connected with Mike Trombetta for a seven-yard score with 3:17 left in the first, capping a nine-play drive.




Borsellino raced 60 yards to paydirt for his second score early in the second. Derek Hitt carried the bulk of the load for the duration of the first half and into the second, striking on a two-yard plunge to extend the edge to 28-0 at the midway point of the second. Benedictine led 35-0 at halftime thanks to Preston Earl hitting tight end Bryan Wiesemann for a six-yard score with 3:40 remaining. The score was setup by a 44-yard scamper from Hitt. 

Hitt posted his second touchdown of the game with 8:44 to play in the third, rumbling in from nine yards out. Maranatha found the endzone for the first time with 2:33 left in the third on a one-yard run by Ethan Lane.



Benedictine's last score of the afternoon came through the air as Matt Brown found Cedric Rowland with 14:01 to play on a 14-yard score.

Two played eclipsed 100 yards rushing for Benedictine with Hitt leading the way, netting 128 yards and two scores on 15 carries. Borsellino carried 12 times for 125 yards and two scores. The Eagles rolled up 447 yards of offense while surrendering just 207. J.T. Zimmerman and Eric Rickert were each in on nine tackles to lead the defense.  




Benedictine (5-2, 4-0) travels to Lakeland for action next Saturday afternoon.
