Second Half Presses Women's Hoops to NAC Opening Win

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Four student athletes eclipsed double figures and the bench netted 38 points as the Benedictine University women's basketball team rallied past MSOE 80-69 to open play in the Northern Athletics Conference with a road win at the Kern Center on Wednesday night.

Benedictine led by as many as five points early in the contest before MSOE rallied. The Raiders used a 9-0 run to turn a three-point edge into a 12 point lead at 31-19 with 4:13 remaining in the half. The Eagles countered with an 8-0 run featuring a pair of threes from Karyn Conerty and Mary Calov to claw within 31-27, but still found themselves trailing at the half 38-35.

Tracey Walsh evened the game at 41 all early in the second half with a free throw, the first tie of the game and first of three in the second half. Knotted at 51, the Eagles used a 17-4 run to take control of the contest at 68-55. Colleen Forkin scored the first four points of the run with a layup and two free throws while Walsh completed the surge with a three-point play with 8:15 left. MSOE could get no closer than five in the rest of the contest.

The Eagles were lights out in the second half, hitting on 60 percent (15-25) of their shots including a sizzling 6-of-9 from three-point land. Benedictine shot 53.8% for the contest and overcame 21 MSOE offensive rebounds. The Raiders (1-2, 0-1) held a 39-23 edge on the glass.

Karyn Conerty paced Benedictine with 17 points off the bench, burying five treys. Colleen Forkin chipped in with 15 in a reserve role while Walsh tallied 14 and Lidia Arias 11. Heather Miller notched a game best 22 points to lead MSOE, also adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Carol Cayo also added a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards.

Benedictine (3-1, 1-0) tallied a season high total for points in the victory. The Eagles will meet Concordia Wisconsin on the road Saturday afternoon in a matchup of teams picked to win their respective divisions in the NAC. The meeting will be the only matchup between the two during the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game can be heard live through the Benedictine website with Mark Vasko on the call from Wisconsin.
