Benedictine douses the Inferno in Milwaukee

Benedictine continues hot streak in Milwaukee

Lidia Arias' double double led the Eagles to victory Thursday.
Box Score

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – To say Benedictine is on a roll may be a bit of an understatement. The women’s basketball team has been nearly unbeatable as of late, winning five of its last six games, including a 74-66 win Thursday over host Alverno College.

Lidia Arias led the Eagles with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting including a 2-of-4 mark from beyond the arc. Arias collected a double double, also adding a game-high 10 rebounds to her night.

Tracey Walsh chipped in 16 points of her own, while Karyn Conerty added 15. Senior Monika Krozel added nine points and four rebounds.

Thursday’s victory elevated Benedictine to 10-10 overall and 8-7 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play.

The victory also moved Benedictine into third place in the NAC South division as they make a late push toward the NAC tournament.

The contest appeared to be a blowout early on as Benedictine jumped out to a quick advantage. The Eagles took a 15-point lead just seven minutes into the game.

Alverno (12-10, 10-6 in NAC) cut the deficit to 11 points, but back-to-back scores from Conerty and Walsh put the Eagle lead at a comfortable 16 points with 8:34 left in the first half.

Alverno crawled back into the contest when a Gabby Allen (19 points, 9 rebounds) layup with just 19 seconds left brought Alverno within seven at the end of the first half.

The Inferno continued to chip away, gaining a 50-49 lead from Allen. A Kelsey Kochanowski jumper gave Alverno a three-point advantage with just 7:58 left.

The teams traded baskets until a Sam Hathaway jumper with a little under four minutes left gave the Eagles a 58-56 lead. Benedictine would never look back, finishing the game on a 16-8 run and hitting nine of 10 free throws down the stretch.

Benedictine will be back in action at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday when they take on Wisconsin Lutheran in the Rice Center.
