ST. LOUIS, Missouri- Benedictine University’s men’s baseball team was singing the blues Saturday after dropping two games in St. Louis.
In the first game, an 11-1 defeat at the hands of Illinois Wesleyan University (4-5) in a shortened seven-inning affair, Benedictine ran into a dazzling performance from IWU’s Jason Pankau (2-0). The 6-foot-2 junior pitched a seven-inning, one-hitter.
The second contest, a 9-0 loss at the hands of Washington University in St. Louis, saw the Eagles generate more offense as
Mitch McMeen,
Nick Perry and
Dan Zust all picked up hits, while
Kevin Hendricks and
Jerry Barrera each reached base twice via walks.
Benedictine starter
Phil Palmisano was unable to shake a rough fifth inning which saw Bears explode for six runs on six hits.
Palmisano (0-1) took the loss, going 4.1 innings allowing eight runs (six earned) while striking out two.
The bright spot of Saturday’s second contest was the impressive display from the Benedictine bullpen.
In relief of Palmisano,
Keith Haglund allowed just one run over 1.1 innings.
Following Haglund’s lead,
Pat Collis and
Brendan McElhaney pitched masterfully out of the bullpen, combining for 2.1 innings of hitless relief.
Benedictine (1-5) will return to the diamond Tuesday when it hosts its first home game of the season against Carthage College at the Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
