WHEATON, Ill. - The Benedictine University softball team split a road non-conference doubleheader with Wheaton College on Monday afternoon, winning 1-0 and falling 14-7.
BENEDICTINE 1, WHEATON 0
Brittany Adcox (Plainfield, Ill.) hurled a complete game shutout as the Eagles blanked Wheaton 1-0 in the opener. Adcox carried a no-hitter in the fifth inning before allowing an infield single to Lauren Griffith. She struck out nine in twirling her first shutout of the season in her third complete game. For the game, Adcox surrendered just three hits while walking three.
Benedictine plated the lone run of the contest in the fourth inning.
Brittany Adcox started the offense with a one-out single to help her cause.
Erin Galloway (Dwight, Ill.) posted an infield hit to place runners at first and second. Following a double steal,
Sam Corban (Plainfield, Ill.) drove in the lone run with an RBI groundout.
The Eagles recorded six hits in the game.
Laura Christensen (Orland Park, Ill.) was the lone player with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-3 out of the leadoff slot.
WHEATON 14, BENEDICTINE 7
Benedictine led 2-0 in the contest by scoring runs in the first and second innings.
Laura Christensen led off the game by drawing a walk from Wheaton starter Danielle Schmidt. With two outs
Cassie Cappetto (Oak Lawn, Ill.) drove in the game's first run with a single.
Steff Rybarczyk (Chicago, Ill.) scored an unearned run in the second, crossing the plate on an error after being hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Wheaton took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, chasing Benedictine starter
Kaitlin Walsh (Schaumburg, Ill.) from the game. The Thunder added four in the fourth and a pair in the fifth to open a 9-2 lead.
The Eagles rallied to within 9-7 by scoring five runs in the top of the sixth.
Brittany Adcox led off with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch.
Aimee Mahoney (Gardner, Ill.) singled, stole second, and scored when
Brittany Wolski (Orland Park, Ill.) singled.
Kara Walsh (Oak Forest, Ill.) tripled in a pair with two outs.
Cassie Cappetto plated Walsh with a double.
Wheaton came back with five more runs in the bottom of the inning to cement the final. The Thunder (8-5) banged out 17 hits in the game against three different hurlers. Benedictine amassed nine hits.
Brittany Wolski was 3-for-4 at the plate while
Cassie Cappetto posted two hits.
Benedictine (8-3) is 3-2 against the CCIW during the 2010 campaign. The Eagles are off until Tuesday, March 30, when another CCIW opponent, North Central College, visits for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader in the final non-conference games of the season.
