LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team played a makeup game on Tuesday afternoon with Carthage College, ranked 12th in the d3baseball.com poll, and notched a 13-5 victory.
Benedictine opened a 6-0 lead by scoring a run in the first and adding five in the second to bounce Carthage starter Andy Pucher. The first run scored with two outs.
Josh Zenawick (Orland Park, Ill.) started the two-out rally by walking.
Kevin Hendricks (Mundelein, Ill.) followed with a single and
Gino Miglio (Chicago, Ill.) drove in the first run with a single.
All five runs in the second were unearned.
Mitch McMeen (Streator, Ill.) recorded a one-out double and scored on an bases loaded RBI single by
Josh Zenawick.
Kevin Hendricks drove in two with a single through the right side. Another single by
Gino Miglio chased Pucher from the game and pushed the advantage to 5-0.
Tim Gindville (New Lenox, Ill.) capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single down the line in left to score Hendricks.
Carthage scored three runs in the third inning off Benedictine starter
Jake Thompson (Woodridge, Ill.) to claw within 6-3.
Mitch McMeen singled to begin the bottom of the third and crossed the plate on a single by
Nick Karakosta (Addison, Ill.) to push the lead to 7-3. Carthage answered with two runs in the fifth inning to pull to within 7-5, but the Eagles put the game away with another five spot in the bottom of the frame.
Tim Gindville provided the big hit with a bases loaded single to score a pair.
Carthage used four pitchers in the game and allowed Benedictine to tally 16 hits, only two of which went for extra bases.
Nick Karakosta was 3-for-5 out of the leadoff slot with three runs scored.
Kevin Hendricks posted three hits and drove in three runs in addition to scoring a pair.
Tim Gindville finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Thompson went the distance to pick up his first win of the season. Thompson struck out nine and allowed five runs on eight hits. In his first start, the season opening loss to Webster, he tossed 8.1 innings.
The Eagles have posted both of their wins this season against foes receiving national attention. Coe College was receiving votes in the Top 25 when the Eagles toppled them on March 8 in Florida.
Benedictine (2-5) will play a pair of games on Wednesday at the Sports Complex. North Park University, also from the CCIW, visits for a 4:00 p.m. contest. Robert Morris University-Chicago will follow with a game at 7:00 p.m. The game is an addition to the schedule after the Eagles lost six games to weather early in the season.
