LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team concluded a busy week by hosting Wheaton College in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon and falling 7-4. The contest was initally scheduled to be played on Thursday but was postponed due to freezing conditions.
The teams traded zeroes until the top of the fourth inning when Wheaton opened a 1-0 lead by scoring an unearned run. Drew Golz reached on an error with one out. Danny Pyne singled to move Golz to third and Mark Price drove in the first run with a single up the middle off Benedictine starter
David Flott (Hoffman Estates, Ill.).
The Thunder added four more unearned runs in the fifth inning to go up 5-0 and chase Flott from the game. Ryan Miller drew a one-out walk, moved to third when Brian Kolb reached on an error and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. A Drew Golz double with two outs scored Kolb from third. Danny Pyne singled off the first base bag to drive in the final runs of the inning. Flott did not allow an earned run in his 4.2 innings of work, walking three and striking out four.
Benedictine was able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Nick Karakosta (Addison, Ill.) led off the inning with a walk and
Kyle Rathbun followed with a single to move Karakosta to third. With one out,
Kevin Hendricks (Mundelein, Ill.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
Wheaton tacked on a run in the seventh against reliever
Dan Jedlowski (Chicago, Ill.). Benedictine countered in the bottom of the frame.
Colin Gilreath (Westmont, Ill.) walked with one out and
Kevin Ross (Lake Zurich, Ill.) was hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter
Derek Klinetobe singled up the middle to drive home Gilreath and chase Wheaton starter Trey Martin.
Jimmy Janchenko (Bedford Park, Ill.) pinch hit and coaxed a bases loaded walk to drive in a run.
Josh Zenawick (Orland Park, Ill.) brought the Eagles within 6-4 with a sacrifice fly.
Wheaton scraped across an insurance run in the top of the ninth to go up 7-4. The Thunder (10-3) amassed 10 hits in the contest. Five different individuals posted hits for Benedictine.
The Eagles (3-7) will host Wheaton again on Monday afternoon in the second game of a three-game set. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
