LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team swept a home non-conference doubleheader from Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon.
BENEDICTINE 6, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 2 -- Game One
The Eagles broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning by scoring twice in a seven-inning victory.
Leadoff hitter
Derek Klinetobe opened the game by drawing a walk and moved to third on two errors.
Josh Zenawick drove home Klinetobe with a single to right. Illinois Wesleyan tied the score with an unearned run in the top of the second.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning,
Nick Karakosta put Benedictine ahead with a double to left, scoring a pair. The Eagles added three more in the fourth to put the contest away.
Nick Karakosta recorded a bases loaded single to push the advantage to 4-1.
Josh Zenawick, the NAC Position Player of the Week, was hit by a pitch to force in a run and the third crossed the plate on a wild pitch as the Eagles led 6-1. Illinois Wesleyan picked up an unearned run in the sixth to account for the final score.
Louis Soto (Chicago, Ill.) threw six innings to pick up his first victory of the season. He allowed just two hits while walking six and striking out three.
Mike Loni finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored while
Nick Karakosta boasted two hits and three RBIs.
BENEDICTINE 5, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 1 -- Game Two
Benedictine rallied from a 1-0 deficit and picked up three insurance runs in the eighth to come away with the sweep.
The visiting Titans scored the game's first run in the fourth inning, taking advantage of consecutive hits to push across a run on a groundout off Benedictine starter
Jake Thompson. The Eagles came back with two in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Nick Karakosta and
Josh Zenawick singled to start the inning.
Kevin Hendricks plated the tying run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Gino Miglio put Benedictine ahead with a single to right.
With
Mitch McMeen and
Gino Miglio aboard in the eighth,
Colin Gilreath delivered the insurance with a three-run homer deep to left.
Jake Thompson tossed seven innings to log his second victory of the spring. He allowed just one run on six hits while striking out four.
Pat Collis struck out the side in the eighth and Michael Cottier threw the ninth to seal the win.

Josh Zenawick all posted multi-hit games with two each as the Eagles totaled 10 in the game against five different pitchers.
Benedictine (5-8) travels to meet Wheaton College tomorrow afternoon in a 4:30 p.m. contest. The game will be played at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Ill. Alexian Field is home to the Northern League's Schaumburg Flyers. Wheaton has won the first two meetings of the season with Benedictine, both of which were played at the Sports Complex.
