WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Benedictine University baseball team notched its first victory of the season, scoring four runs in the second inning to knock off Coe College 7-3.

Tim Gindville (New Lenox, Ill.) led off the four-run second inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Kevin Ross (Lake Zurich, Ill.). Mitch McMeen (Streator, Ill.) drew a walk and Adam LeRoy (Aurora, Ill.) singled to load the bases. Nick Karakosta (Addison, Ill.) walked to force in a run. With one out Josh Zenawick (Orland Park, Ill.) singled off Coe starter Kevin Baranowski to push the edge to 2-0. Kevin Hendricks (Mundelein, Ill.) forced in another run with a walk and Gino Miglio (Chicago, Ill.) capped the inning with an infield single to drive in Karakosta.

Coe scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to pull within a run. Nick Stein, the second batter of the inning, connected on a two-run homer off Benedictine starter James Callahan (Downers Grove, Ill.). Pat Richmond scored an unearned run to cap the scoring in the frame.

Benedictine netted some insurance in the top of the ninth, taking advantage of two errors to push across three runs and account for the final score. Kevin Hendricks reached on an error and pinch runner Dan Glennon moved up to second on a sacrifice. Gindville singled up the middle to drive in Glennon and scored later on an error. LeRoy finished the rally with an RBI groundout.

Callahan threw seven innings in his first start of the season to pick up the victory. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out five. Miglio was 3-for-4 in the win while Gindville went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a pair of runs. Zenawick stole a pair of bases.

Coe (4-3), out of the Iowa Conference, received votes in the last D3baseball.com poll.

The Eagles (1-3) are off until Thursday when they face Bethany Lutheran.
