LISLE, Ill. -- The Benedictine University baseball team managed just nine hits in a doubleheader loss to Lakeland College on a beautiful Saturday.

LAKELAND 8, BENEDICTINE 0 -- Game One
Lakeland starting pitcher Lee Chepil struck out 10 without walking a batter and allowed just five hits in a complete game shutout victory.

The visiting Muskies scored first in the third inning, scratching a run across on three singles off of  Benedictine starter Jake Thompson (Woodridge, Ill.). Thompson suffered his first loss of the season, throwing seven innings and allowing four runs on nine hits to go with a walk and six strikeouts.

Lakeland struck again in the sixth, scoring three runs. The big blow of the frame was a two-run homer to left off the bat of Doug Novak. The Muskies scored three runs in the seventh and added another insurance tally with an unearned run in the ninth. Lakeland had 14 hits in the game against three different Benedictine hurlers.

Five players posted hits for Benedictine. The Eagles had a run thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the second inning which would have put them in front. Only one other runner reached third base the entire contest.

LAKELAND 3, BENEDICTINE 1 -- Game Two
Two second inning runs held up as Lakeland rode the arm of Matt Katzman in the game two victory.

Katzman worked into the eighth inning and allowed just an unearned run on three hits to go with a pair of walks and four strikeouts for the Muskies.

Lakeland plated two runs in the second off Benedictine starter Louis Soto (Chicago, Ill.). Doug Novak singled in Brad Young, who doubled to start the inning. The second run came across on a wild pitch. Soto threw six innings but was hit with his first loss of the season. He allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Dan Jedlowski (Chicago, Ill.) struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief while Michael Cottier (Benton Harbor, Mich.) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.

Both teams traded runs in the sixth inning with Lakeland getting a solo homer from Cody Gust. Benedictine started a two-out rally with a Josh Zenawick (Orland Park, Ill.) double  in the bottom of the inning. He came in to score on an error. The Eagles threatened late, placing the tying runs on in the eighth before hitting into a double play. Colin Gilreath (Westmont, Ill.) posted two of the four Benedictine hits.

Benedictine takes to the road on Sunday for a doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
