RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Benedictine University softball maintained its perfect 6-0 mark in the Northern Athletics Conference with Sunday sweep of Dominican University in River Forest.
BENEDICTINE 10, DOMINICAN 4 -- Game One
Benedictine jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a
Cassie Cappetto single scored centerfielder
Laura Christensen.
Dominican University (13-7, 6-2 in NAC) answered back in quick fashion with a 3-run home run off the bat of Carolyn Rogers to give the Stars a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first.
Dominican added a 1-run cushion in the second as they again went to the long-ball, this time a solo homer from Shelley Kurcz.
Benedictine got back on the scoreboard in the fifth as two straight wild pitches allowed Christensen and
Brittany Wolski to advance to second and third.
Kara Walsh then singled scoring a pair, cutting the Dominican advantage to 4-3.
Benedictine batted around the order in the sixth, exploding for seven runs.
Sam Corban started the rally reaching on a Dominican error.
Adcox followed with a single of her own, followed again by a Stephanie Rybarczyk single to load the bases.
Aimee Mahoney drew a walk scoring pinch runner
Lucy Poro, tying the contest at four apiece.
Christensen singled scoring Rybarczyk and Adcox while Wolski followed with yet another single driving in Mahoney and giving Benedictine a comfortable 7-4 lead. Christensen went 2-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Unfortunately, for Dominican, Benedictine was far from finished. Cappetto and
Erin Galloway hit back-to-back singles driving in three more Benedictine runs giving the Eagles a 10-4 lead.
Adcox, after a shaky first few innings, would shut the Stars down allowing only one hit in the final five innings while striking out eight.
BENEDICTINE 14, DOMINICAN 2 -- Game Two
Sunday’s second game of the doubleheader was much of the same for Benedictine.
While Dominican jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after two, Benedictine got on the board quickly when Brittany Wolski’s single in the third drove in
Aimee Mahoney.
Erin Galloway led off the fourth with a solo home run tying the game at two. Mahoney followed soon after with a sac fly scoring Stephanie Rybarczyk, giving the Eagles their first lead of the contest at 3-2.
Benedictine added plenty of cushion in the fifth, picking up four runs on just four hits.
Cassie Cappetto doubled to drive in a pair. Wolski followed with a single of her own scoring
Laura Christensen.
Pitcher
Sam Corban helped her own cause reaching on an error scoring Cappetto.
Corban, starting game two of the doubleheader, shut down the Dominican attack allowing only four hits over seven innings while striking out four.
Much like the first game Sunday, Benedictine continued the assault late, this time scoring six runs in the seventh inning to put the game very much out of Dominican’s reach.
Cappetto went 2-5 with three RBIs while Christensen and Wolski picked up three hits apiece.
Kara Walsh went 2-3 while
Erin Galloway led the Eagles with three runs scored.
Sunday’s sweep puts Benedictine at 17-4 overall including a conference-leading 6-0 record in the NAC. Benedictine will be back on the diamond Tuesday April 13 as they continue conference play against Rockford College.
