LISLE, Ill. -- The Benedictine University baseball team won its third straight NAC game on Sunday afternoon, using an eight-run fifth to rally and top Dominican University 14-4.
Dominican roared out to a 4-0 lead by scoring three first inning runs and adding another in the second against Benedictine starter
Kyle Kukulski. The first inning runs scored on four straight hits with one out.
Benedictine began the comeback in the bottom of the second.
Tom Higgins led off the frame with a double.
Dan Zust walked and
Kevin Hendricks singled to load the bases. With one out,
Tim Gindville opened the scoring with a two-run single.
Hendricks helped give the Eagles the lead in the third.
Josh Zenawick doubled and scored when
Colin Gilreath singled to center. With two outs, Hendricks connected on the first of two homers in the game, clearing the wall in right to put the Eagles ahead 5-4.
Josh Zenawick's RBI single in the fourth stretched the lead to 6-4.
The eight-run fifth included a pair of big homers. The first run crossed on an RBI single by
Mike Loni. With the bases loaded Gilreath belted his team-leading fourth homer of the season to right-center. The grand slam was the second of the season for both the Eagles and Gilreath. Moments later Hendricks connected on a three-run blast to push the lead to 14-4.
Hendricks paced an 18-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with two homers, four runs scored, and five RBIs. Gilreath was 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Zenawick was 3-for-4 while Loni, Higgins, and
Mitch McMeen recorded two hits apiece.
Rain began falling immediately after the final out was made of the first contest. The rain was steady enough and did not cease, forcing the postponement of the game.
Benedictine (15-16, 10-5 NAC) will make up the second game with Dominican on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
