LISLE, Ill. – Despite forcing 24 Inferno turnovers, the Benedictine University women's basketball dropped a 57-50 decision to Alverno College on Saturday afternoon in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
The loss put the Eagles at 11-7 overall and 7-5 in Northern Athletics Conference. The Inferno are now 9-10 overall and 6-7 in NAC play.
Benedictine built an early six-point lead with back-to-back three's from
Karyn Conerty but the Inferno scored on three Eagle turnovers and took an eight-point advantage of their own. With less than a minute remaining BenU cut their deficit to one with a jumper from
Tracey Walsh but AC's Shataya McComb hit a free-throw at the end of the half to give them a 26-24 halftime lead.
The Eagles shot just 29.6 percent from the field (8-for-27) while the Inferno were 11-for-30 (36.7 percent).
Both teams traded leads to start the second half but jumpers from Gabby Allen and McComb stretched the Inferno lead to nine with less than five minutes remaining.
In the final two minutes, Benedictine forced four turnovers and cut the lead to just one with a jumper from
Jenn Bren but McComb answered right back with a three to eventually clinch the 57-50 victory over the Eagles.
Bren led the Eagles with 12 points and 10 rebounds while
Colleen Forkin had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Walsh had 10 points and three steals while
Lidia Arias had five points and a game high five steals.
As a team, BenU was 19-for-64 from the field (29.7 percent) and were out-rebounded 52-31.
McComb led AC with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Benedictine women's hoops is back in action on Wednesday, February 1 when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7:00 p.m. in the Rice Center.
