Eagles Run Past Concordia Wisconsin

The Benedictine University football team amassed over 200 yards on the ground to rush past Concordia University Wisconsin 20-14 and improve to 3-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

Benedictine forced a turnover on the first Concordia Wisconsin possession of the game with Justin Kassner recovering a fumble by Joe Paul at the Benedictine 44-yardline. It took just two plays to open the scoring as John Alessi took a handoff 64-yard for the opening score toput the Eagles ahead 7-0. The score was the only strike of the first half for either side, though Benedictine forced another turnover on a Ben Carpenter interception and also missed a field goal.

Mike Theriault intercepted Austin Damaschke in the redzone midway through the third to set the stage for the second score. John Borsellino cashed on onve-play later with a 15-yard score to pad the lead to 13-0 with 7:47 left in the third.

Following a three-and-out, Borsellino struck again, racing 52 yards for his 10th rushing TD of the season to extend the advantage to 20-0 at the 4:50 mark of the third.

The host Falcons attempted to rally on homecoming, finishing a 10-play drive early in the fourth when Damaschke hooked up with Garrett Wenzelburger on a four-yard score to claw within 20-7 with 7:57 to play in the game.

Benedictine (4-2, 3-0) attempted to run out the clock, holding the ball for over six minutes on an 11-play drive that stalled inside the redzone. Concordia Wisconsin followed with a quick strike on a 23-yard connection between Damaschke and Wenzelburger to pull within a score and also recovered the onside kick before a pair of sacks ended the game. Each team posted four sacks in the contest.

The Eagles totaled 357 yards including 229 on the groundagainst the top defense in the NAC. Borsellino collected his third 100-yard game of the season, coasting for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 30 carries. Alessi added 74 yards on 10 carries. Quarterbak Matt Brown completed 12 of 21 attempts for 128 yards. The defense held one of the league's best rushing attacks to only 66 yards on 28 carries. Trent Altieri led the defense with 10 tackles including nine solo. Ben Lockton recorded a block of an extra point in addition to a sack, a pass breakup, and 2.5 tackles for loss.

The next stop on the Benedictine title defense is at Maranatha on October 22 at 12:00 p.m.
