Baseball Competes on Spring Break Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Benedictine University baseball team is five games deep in their annual spring break trip to Winter Haven, Fla., picking up two wins against Loras College and Hamilton College.

Benedictine defeated Loras 5-4 after Nick Karakosta's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth that drove in the winning run. Kevin Hendricks tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run double. Tom Higgins was 3-4 in the game with two runs scored. Kevin Crowley received the win after two innings in relief with one strikeout.

On the second day of the trip, the Eagles dropped two games to Hope College. In the first game, Mark Belcastro received the loss while Mike Luschen was 2-2 with an RBI and two doubles. In game two, Uli Ortiz was 3-3 while Jeff Ferstein was 1-1 with the only run of the game, driven in on a sac fly from Mike Loni.

The Eagles bounced back against Hamilton with a 6-4 win. Robert Grabek picked up the win for BenU, pitching six innings with six strikeouts. Mike Cottier received the save with three strikeouts. Karakosta was 3-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while Jack Holden was 1-4 with two RBI.

Against Williams & Jefferson College, BenU fell 6-2. Phil Palmisano received the loss after pitching five innings with five strikeouts. Hendricks was 1-4 with a homerun and Loni was 1-3 with a double.

Benedictine continues their trip on Thursday when they take on Bowdoin College at 12:00 p.m. The Eagles wrap up the trip with a double header against Grinnell College on Friday and a single game against Southern Maine on Saturday.
