LISLE, Ill. – The Benedictine University baseball team moved to 5-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference after splitting a doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday afternoon at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
Both teams remained scoreless until the sixth when each team tallied a run but it was Wisconsin Lutheran's (13-8, 6-1) offense that would come alive in the eighth, scoring three runs off of two hits and one BenU error.
Benedictine tried to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, but came up short as WLC went on to win 4-3.
Jake Thompson allowed six hits and gave up zero earned runs in 8.0 innings, picking up the loss for BenU. At the plate, Hendricks was 2-4 with a run while
Dan Zust was 2-3 with an RBI.
In the second game, both teams remained scoreless until the seventh when Benedictine's offense was ignited with a bunt single from Zust and a two-run single from Ortiz to take a 3-0 lead. The Eagles tallied another run in the eighth with an RBI from
Josh Zenawick.
Wisconsin Lutheran would threaten in the ninth and would score one run off of one hit but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held on to secure the 4-1 win.
Matt Vucovich picked up the win allowing just four hits in 9.0 innings with five strikeouts. Ortiz was 1-3 with two RBI while Zenawick, Zust and Hendricks each had hits in the game.
Benedictine is back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Illinois Wesleyan for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
