LISLE, Ill. – Both teams entered Sunday's doubleheader with an undefeated Northern Athletics Conference record but it was Benedictine University who came out on top, sweeping Dominican University ,13-1 and 12-4, on Sunday afternoon.
Offensively, the Eagles (18-4, 8-0 NAC) dominated, tallying 14 hits on 13 runs. Benedictine scored two runs in the first inning and then another six runs in the second, taking an early 8-0 lead. In the third, the Eagles had four hits, scoring three more runs and secured the win when they scored two runs in the fourth.
Kara Walsh was a perfect 4-4 with two singles, a double and a triple, scoring three runs and tallying six RBI.
Cassie Cappetto was 2-3 with two RBI. On the mound,
Brittany Adcox received her ninth win of the year, giving up four hits with four strikeouts. As a team, the Eagles had nine stolen bases.
In game two, both teams were scoreless through two innings until Dominican (12-6, 6-2) scored three runs in the third off of four hits. Benedictine rallied back, tallying a run in the bottom of the frame when
Brittany Wolski scored on an Adcox single, after doubling to left field.
The Eagles had a monstrous fourth inning, scoring eight runs on five hits to take the 9-3 lead. After allowing the Stars to score a run in the top of the fifth,
Laura Christensen led off the inning with a triple followed by a single from
Kelly Mieszala. Wolski then doubled to left, driving in two runs and would later score on a Dominican error and end the game in the fifth inning.
Sam Corban picked up the win for the Eagles, her ninth of the year. Wolski was 3-4 with three runs and three RBI while Walsh was 2-3. Christensen was 2-3 with two runs and
Steff Rybarczyk was 1-2 with a run and an RBI.
Benedictine is back in action on Tuesday, April 12 when they travel to Elmhurst College for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
