BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team used a four-run second inning to help them defeat No. 23 Illinois Wesleyan University, 9-3, on Tuesday night at Horenberger Field.
The Eagles (13-10) tallied a run in the first inning when
Nick Karakosta led off with a walk and then stole second. He would then reach third base on a throwing error by IWU (14-7).
Kevin Hendricks would drive the run in later in the inning.
In the second, Benedictine added four more runs to their lead off of three hits including a two-run double from Karakosta.
Illinois Wesleyan scored two runs in the inning to cut their deficit to just three but the Eagles made the score 7-2 in the fourth inning, scoring two more runs.
A double from
Dan Zust in the sixth would drive in two more runs and the Titans would score one more run in the seventh. The Eagles would hold off the IWU offense for the rest of the game to secure the 9-3 victory.
David Nowaczyk would pick up his second win of the year, giving up 10 hits and striking out six batters in 7.0 innings.
Phil Palmisano pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
At the plate, Karakosta was 2-3 with three runs scored and two RBI while
Uli Ortiz tallied two hits and two RBI. Hendricks was 2-3 and
Jeff Ferstein was 1-1.
Benedictine is back in action this weekend when they travel to Marian University for a 12:00 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
