Eagles Split With Edgewood

LISLE, Ill. - After dropping the first game of a doubleheader against Edgewood College, the Benedictine University baseball team used a 4-0 second inning to defeat EC 4-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, Edgewood got on the board in the third inning, scoring one run off of two hits. Edgewood College added another two runs in the fifth inning to make the score 3-0.

Benedictine scored a run in the eighth when Nick Karakosta reached on an error and then scored on a Jack Holden double to center field.

In the top of the ninth, EC tallied two hits and scored three runs to go up 6-1. The Eagles could not come up with any hits in the bottom fo the frame, falling 6-1 to Edgewood.

Jake Thompson received the loss for BenU while Karakosta, Holden and Uli Ortiz each had hits in the game.

In game two, the Eagles scored four runs in the second. Jack Holden led off with a double down the left field line followed by an RBI-double from Tom Higgins. The Eagle offense kept coming with a Karakosta single to center and Mike Loni followed with a single, driving in two runs. Dan Zust would then help score the final run of the inning with a sac fly.

Edgewood would add a run in the third and then add two more in the fifth. In the top of the ninth, EC threatened to tie the game when O'Dell led off with a double and with one out, Ortego flied out to center field and O'Dell was out at third on a great throw by Mitch McMeen.

Mark Belcastro got the win for BenU, pitching 5.0 innings with five strikeouts. Matt Vucovich started the game and had four strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

Holden was 2-4 with a double while Karakosta was 3-4 with a stolen base.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, April 6 when they host University of Chicago at 4:00 p.m.
