LISLE, Ill. – The Benedictine University baseball team snapped their five-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to Concordia University Chicago 11-0 and 4-3 at the Sports Complex.
For the Eagles (18-14, 9-7), runs were hard to come by, especially in game one where they were held to just four hits.
The Cougars would grab an early lead, pushing one run across in the second and three more in the third. The big blow came in the eighth inning as CUC rallied for five runs to put the game out of reach. The game would end via the ten-run rule after the Eagles failed to score in the bottom half of the inning.
BenU committed four errors and stranded five runners in the game.
Senior hurler
Jake Thompson suffered the loss, falling to 1-5 on the season. The Downers Grove, Ill. native allowed eight runs – seven earned – on 13 hits in seven innings of work. Thompson also walked three and struck out five.
The Eagles would return the favor in game two, or so they thought. After putting one run on the board in the second frame and two more runs in the third, BenU held an early 3-0 advantage.
However, the Cougars would counter with a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to pull ahead, 4-3. This was all the run support CUC would need as their pitching staff held Eagles' hitters to just four hits in the second game, as well.
Zenawick produced two of BenU's four hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Zust was 1-for-3, while sophomore
Nick Karakosta was 1-for-5 with a run scored.
The Eagles committed two errors and stranded seven runners in the game.
Sophomore
Dave Nowaczyk (3-1) took the loss, throwing a complete game and allowing four runs on six hits. The southpaw walked four and fanned seven.
Benedictine will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Aurora University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
