LISLE, Ill. – The Benedictine University baseball team used a three-run first inning to defeat the University of Chicago 8-4 in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon at the Sports Complex.
The Eagles (8-8) jumped out to an early lead and would never look back, lashing out ten hits on the afternoon and taking advantage of three Maroons' miscues.
The Maroons would put together a two-run sixth inning to make it 3-2. However, BenU answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single from senior
Jack Holden, making it 5-2.
Once again, U. of C. would not go quietly. Trailing 5-2, the Maroons struck for two runs in the eighth, but it was all for naught as the Eagles countered yet again with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Holden ignited the BenU offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sophomore outfielder
Kevin Hendricks continued his recent success, putting together a 1-for-3 performance and driving in one.
Freshman pitcher
Dave Nowaczyk picked up his first win for the Eagles, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits.
Sophomore Michael Cottier closed the door in the ninth inning, assuring BenU of their eighth victory.
The Eagles will resume conference play as they host Maranatha Baptist Bible College (Wis.) tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader at the Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
