NAPERVILLE, Ill. – After falling 7-6 in a nine-inning first game, the Benedictine University softball team came back to beat North Central College 14-1 in the second game to split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday night at Shanower Field.
Benedictine (14-4) put a run on the board in the first inning after
Brittany Adcox doubled and
Kara Walsh singled. With one out,
Sam Corban had an RBI-single that would give BenU the 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Eagles scored one run but North Central (12-6) used a 5-run fifth inning to take the lead off of three hits and a three-run homerun from Schramm.
In the top of the seventh, BenU forced extra innings when they tied the game after
Cassie Cappetto doubled to left and scored on a Rybarczyk single to right field. The Eagles held NCC scoreless in the bottom of the frame and neither team could score a run in the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals scored one run after two defensive errors by the Eagles to secure the 7-6 win.
Adcox received the loss, giving up just five hits with three strikeouts. At the plate, Wolski and Adcox were 2-5 with one RBI and Rybarczyk was 3-2 with two RBI and Christensen tallied two hits and two RBI. Benedictine had five stolen bases.
In the second game, the Eagles dominated the first inning, scoring nine runs off of six hits and two Cardinal errors.
The Eagles would score another four runs in the third. Mieszala and Wolski led off with doubles followed by singles from Adcox, Cappetto and
Jess Fijolek. North Central scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the frame but it wasn't enough as BenU would go on to win 14-1 in five innings.
Corban picked up another win on the year, giving up just two hits with three strikeouts. As a team, BenU was 16-28 with every player tallying at least one hit.
The Benedictine softball team is back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Alverno College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Eagles are back home on Sunday, April 10 for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader against Dominican University.
