The game was played on the campus of Western Michigan University at Waldo Stadium, home of the Broncos.
Benedictine went three-and-out on the opening series and Kalamazoo took advantage of solid field position to march down on 11 plays and kick a 38-yard field goal off the foot of Travis Braun to jump ahead 3-0 with 10:01 remaining in the first quarter. The Hornets stretched the lead to 10-0 by scoring a three-yard rushing touchdown from Dimeko Price on their second possession following a 12-play drive.
A kickoff out of bounds enabled the Eagles to open with solid field position on the ensuing drive. A 35-yard pass from
Matt Brown to
Bryan Wiesemann setup a one-yard score from
John Borsellino, his fifth rushing touchdown of the year, bringing Benedictine within 10-7 with 1:11 left in the first.
Kalamazoo made it three-for-three on offensive possessions as Nick Jones scurried in from two yards away to extend the lead to 17-7. That was as close as the Eagles came in the contest as the Hornets tacked on two more second quarter TDs when Jones connected with Price for a nine-yard score with eight minutes left in the half. After the teams traded interceptions with
Matt McWilliams denying Jones for the first stop, Jones hit Alex Dietrich for a three-yard score to finish the half. Kalamazoo missed a field goal to close the half leading 31-13.
Kalamazoo (3-1) tallied touchdowns on consecutive possessions to open the second half before Benedictine halted the string of four unanswered scores. Borsellino hauled in a 20-yard strike from Brown to cap a 10-play drive with 4:51 to play in the third. Five plays later the Hornets were in the endzone for the third time in the quarter.
The Eagles drove deep into Kalamazoo territory with most coming on one play, a 50-yard connection between Brown and
Derek Hitt before stalling on a fourth down attempt. Another lengthy drive capped the scoring for Kalamazoo.
Borsellino carried 19 times for 78 yards with a touchdown as the Eagles totaled 368 yards. Brown finished the day 11-for-20 with 174 yards a touchdown and an INT. Freshman
