LISLE, Ill. - Sophomore
Michelle Gaede scored a career high 29 points as the Benedictine University women's basketball team defeated Concordia University-Chicago, 69-57, on Tuesday night in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
Gaede was an impressive 9-13 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line. She also tallied a game-high 12 rebounds and tallied five assists to help BenU (8-14, 5-10 NAC) pick up a Northern Athletics Conference victory.
The Eagles started off strong against the Cougars (7-15, 5-10 NAC), going up by as many as 12 in the first nine minutes of action including an 8-0 run sparked by a Gaede layup in the first three minutes.
Concordia-Chicago managed to cut their deficit to single-digits and headed to the lockeroom at half-time down 30-24.
Benedictine's lead slowly diminished in the second half after eight Eagle turnovers in the first eight minutes. A three-pointer from CUC's Dana Topp gave the Cougars their first lead of the game but Gaede answered right back to put BenU back on top and the Eagles kept the lead the rest of the game.
With three minutes remaining and up by six,
Vincenza Ranallo put BenU up by eight after an and-one play to secure the Eagles victory over Concordia-Chicago, 69-57.
Also scoring in double-figures for the Eagles was
Tracey Walsh with 16 points and four boards.
Kam Haifleigh tallied seven rebounds and eight points. As a team, BenU out-rebounded CUC 43-22 but had 19 turnovers compared to the Cougars 14.
Bobbie May led Concordia with 17 points and six assists.
The women's basketball team is back in action this Saturday afternoon when they host Rockford College at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink to celebrate our THINK PINK! event.
