LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team attempted to play a Sunday doubleheader but was only able to finish one game and get halfway through the second before a pair of weather delays forced the suspension of the game.
GAME ONE: DOMINICAN 5, BENEDICTINE 4
Defensive lapses hurt Benedictine in suffering a 5-4 loss in the opener. The Eagles left 10 men on base including the potential tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Ryan Mullin opened the scoring with a two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the third. With the wind blowing in, Mullin drove a homer over the wall in right to score
Dan Zust, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Dominican scored four unanswered runs to take the lead, beginning in the fifth. Adam Quinn doubled home the first run of the game following a bunt single with two outs. A squeeze bunt tied the game in the sixth. Lenny Kunzalo's falre into right scored a pair to hand Dominican a 4-2 lead in the seventh.
Steve Cocat fielded the pop in short right and threw to first but the runner was ruled safe and another run scored.
Benedictine battled back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Mullin lifted a sacrifice fly to drive home
Chris Wanderling. Dominican extended the lead with an insurance tally in the top of the eighth. Benedictine again pulled within a run thanks to an unearned tally in the eighth but could not break through to tie the game.
Kevin Crowley surrendered just two earned runs in 7.1 innings but suffered the loss despite striking out six. Mullin and
John Cervantes notched two hits each.
GAME TWO: BENU leads 5-4 (SUSPENDED IN THE 4th)
Dominican took control early aiming for the sweep, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to chase Benedictine starter
Matt Vucovich from the contest. The Stars placed two runners on without the benefit of a hit after a walk and hit batter. A dropped flyball led to one run before Adam Quinn doubled home two. Jon Basinski caped the inning with a single as the final batter Vucovich faced.
Ty Anderson entered out of the bullpen and escaped damage when Coact made a diving catch in right and threw the ball to the plate to cut off another run from scoring.
Benedictine scored in the bottom of the frame to claw within 4-1, leaving the tying run at the plate.
Nick Karakosta and Coact opened the inning with singles. Wanderling looped an RBI single into center before Dominican starter Cody Mueller worked his way out of the jam.
Game two was halted with one out in the top of the third inning due to lightning. Benedictine scored four runs in the bottom of the third following the delay of over an hour to assume a 5-4 edge before weather again forced the stoppage of play, this time suspending the game.
The game is tentatively scheduled to be made up on Monday night at 6:00 p.m.
