LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team officially finished off Elmhurst College, posting an 8-6 win in the completion of a suspended game on Thursday evening.
The game was started on April 12 with Benedictine scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Tom Higgins led off the frame with a double and scored when
Nick Karakosta doubled. With the bases loaded
Uli Ortiz knifed a single up the middle to score a pair.
John Cervantes came to the plate with the bases loaded and continued the rally with a three-run double before Karakosta recorded an RBI single to cap the scoring.
Elmhurst responded with three runs in the second inning against Benedictine starter Zack Miller, who made his first start of the year. Marc Shield connected on the first of two homers in the game while another run crossed on a wild pitch. Play was halted after the bottom of the third inning due to a power outage and resumed on Thursday.
Both teams used the same pitchers from April 12. Shield delivered another homer for Elmhurst in the top of the fifth, a two-run blast over the wall in right to bring the visitors within 7-5. A Tyler Wargo RBI double later in the frame pulled the Bluejays to within a run at 7-6.
Benedictine added insurance in the bottom of the sixth.
Ryan Mullin drew a walk to open the inning and Cervantes followed by reaching after being hit by a pitch. With one away Karakosta singled to load the bases for
Steve Cocat, who recorded an RBI fielder's choice, just beating the return throw to first allowing Mullin to score.
Shay Wagner shut the door for his seventh save of the season.
Pat Collis picked up his first win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings out of the bullpen as one of five pitchers on the night. Both teams posted 10 hits and left more than 10 runners on base with Elmhurst trapping 11 including the tying runs in the ninth, and Benedictine leaving 12. Karakosta finished 4-for-5 in the game while Ortiz also posted a pair of hits.
The Eagles (20-13) will host Lakeland College in a conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
