MILWAUKEE, Wis. - A day after securing a slot in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, the Benedictine University baseball team saw its season best seven-game win streak come to a halt in the opener of a doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran but rebounded to salvage a split.
GAME ONE: WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 5, BENEDICTINE 4
Benedictine scored three runs in the final two innings but could not overcome Wisconsin Lutheran in the opener.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first inning.
Uli Ortiz logged a one-out single moved to second on a groundout and scored when
John Cervantes posted an RBI single. Wisconsin Lutheran took the lead with single runs in the second and third against Benedictine starter
Kevin Crowley.
Benedictine evened the score in the top of the eighth. Ortiz posted a single and
Ryan Mullin followed suit, moving Ortiz to third. Cervantes tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice.
Wisconsin Lutheran answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to nab a 5-2 lead, taking advantage of two errors. The Eagles attempted to tie the game, but a ninth inning rally fell one run short after
Tim Hendricks scored a run on a wild pitch and Ortiz posted an RBI double. The tying run was stranded at second.
Crowley suffered the defeat despit throwing seven innings and picking up eight strikeouts. Ortiz finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
GAME TWO: BENEDICTINE 10, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 2
Benedictine smashed 15 hits in the second contest, overcoming a 2-0 deficit with an eight-run showing in the fourth.
Nick Diessner made his second start of the season and allowed a pair of first inning runs to the hosts. Benedictine waited until the fourth inning to answer in a big way, plating eight runs.
Tom Higgins singled to lead off the inning before
Nick Karakosta drew a walk. With two outs
Chris Wanderling singled to load the bases.
Dan Zust singled home two runs to tie the game and moved up on the throw. After Ortiz was hit by a pitch to again load the bases, Mullin singled home a pair to put Benedictine ahead 4-2. Cervantes logged an RBI single, Karakosta coaxed a bases loaded walk, and following a pitching change
Tim Gindville drove home the final two runs of the inning with a single.
The Eagles added single runs in the fifth and seventh to secure the win. Mullin lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth while the seventh inning tally crossed on an error.
Diessner threw eight innings, allowing just the two first inning runs, to earn his first victory of the season. Zust and Ortiz posted three hits apiece. Cervantes, Higgins, and Gindville notched two each. Cervantes has reached in 21 consecutive games while Zust now owns a 14-game hitting streak. Both are the longest streaks of the year for Benedictine.
Benedictine (23-14, 15-5) will play a road non-conference game on Wednesday at North Central at 3:00 p.m.
