Baseball Holds Off North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team scored five runs in the third and held off North Central in a 5-4 non-conference win on Wednesday.

The five-run third inning started with one out when Tim Hendricks posted a single. Dan Zust followed with a single, pushing Hendricks to third. Zust quickly stole second. Uli Ortiz drew a walk to load the bases for Ryan Mullin, who put the Eagles on the board with a two-run single. John Cervantes followed by clearing the bases with a three-run homer, his fourth of the year, to hand Benedictine a 5-0 lead.

Chris Jordan made the start on the mound and worked through five scoreless frames to earn the win, scattering six hits and walking one to go with a strikeout.

North Central put two on the board in the sixth and two more in the seventh against the Benedictine bullpen. Pat Collis allowed the tying and go ahead runs to reach in the ninth inning before inducing a double play to notch his first save of the season.

Zust posted three hits and stole three bases out of the leadoff slot while Mullin and Hendricks each collected a pair of hits in the victory.

Benedictine (24-14) closes out the regular season on Saturday at The Sports Complex against the leaders of the Northern Athletics Conference, Rockford. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
