Eagle Watch: Men’s Soccer Looks to Build on Success

All nine of Benedictine University's fall sports teams will be in action this week, with all of them in the thick of or even finished with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Men's soccer looks to continue its strong play after two big wins last week, football returns from the bye week, and four different teams take on Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday. Here is a look at what's upcoming:

FOOTBALL (2-1)

Saturday: at Concordia-Wisconsin (1-2), 1:00 p.m.

Coming out of the bye week, the football team will jump right into NACC play by taking on Concordia-Wisconsin. BenU is just 2-5 in the matchup since the conference was founded in 2006, but has defeated the Falcons twice in the last three seasons. CUW was one of the better teams in the conference last year, finishing in second place last season at 6-1 in conference play.

The Falcons come into the matchup boasting one of the best quarterback/wide receiver combinations in the conference in Austin Damaschke (239.7 passing yards per game, six passing touchdowns) and Garrett Wenzelburger (113.3 receiving yards per game, four receiving touchdowns). CUW came out on top 6-0 in last year's matchup, with Damaschke throwing for 204 yards and a touchdown and Wenzelburger hauling in eight passes for 96 yards. BenU also came into that matchup with a 2-1 record.

VOLLEYBALL (9-10, 3-0)

Friday: at Milwaukee School of Engineering (4-8, 0-2), 7:00 p.m.

The Raiders began the season 3-2, but have scuffled a bit since, losing six of the last seven matches. However, the team has been competitive in most of those matches, as four of those six losses have been in four or five sets. Also, the team has had considerable time off, having not played since September 18. The Eagles defeated MSOE 3-1 last season and have never lost a conference game to the Milwaukee school.

Saturday: vs. Concordia-Wisconsin (7-12, 1-1), 2:00 p.m.

The Falcons have played very well of late, winning four of the last five matches. That includes winning three of four at the NACC/IIAC Invitational this past weekend, an event the Eagles went 2-2 in. In recent years, the Eagles have controlled this matchup, winning the last five meetings including two 3-0 victories last season. The Falcons haven't defeated BenU since 2008 and are 2-7 in the series since the conference was founded in 2006.

MEN'S SOCCER (3-4-1, 2-0-1)

Tuesday: vs. Rockford (0-9, 0-3), 7:00 p.m.

Men's soccer looks to continue its winning streak on Tuesday night at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex when NACC foe Rockford comes to town. The Regents have lost all nine contests this season, being outscored 5-54 and 0-17 in conference games. BenU defeated Rockford 5-1 to close out last season and haven't lost to the Regents in the history of the conference.

Saturday: at Concordia-Wisconsin (3-5-1, 1-1), 1:00 p.m.

Concordia-Wisconsin has dropped four out of the last five games, but the one win in that stretch was an impressive 4-0 victory over Lakeland. In that contest, freshman Gavin Winston netted a hat trick, and those three goals lead the team this season. The Falcons were a force in the conference last season, finishing in third place at 8-2-1 and defeating the Eagles 2-0. Benedictine hasn't beaten CUW since 2006.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (3-6-1, 1-2-1)

Wednesday: at Rockford (0-8, 0-3), 4:00 p.m.

Rockford's women's soccer team has shared its struggles with the men's team, as both teams are looking for win number one on the 2013 campaign. The Regents have been outscored 3-41 overall and 1-15 in conference play, with the lone conference goal coming in a 4-1 loss to Lakeland on September 21. Rockford has not won a conference game since 2008 and hasn't defeated the Eagles in conference play. Last season, BenU won 4-0 behind two goals from Nikki Jhanji.

Saturday: at Concordia-Wisconsin (5-4, 3-0), 3:30 p.m.

The Falcons look to be one of the better teams in the NACC this season, having won three straight to begin the conference season. Those three wins have come against Dominican, Lakeland, and Alverno, and CUW has outscored those three opponents 14-0. Forward Carley Pfannerstill leads the conference with nine goals, and five of those nine goals have come during the three-game win streak. BenU fell to the Falcons 5-1 last season and has not defeated the Mequon, Wisconsin school since 2007.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday: at Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invitational, 11:00 a.m./12:00 p.m.

Both cross country teams return to action this weekend after two weekends off from competition. The men's team has only competed once this season, placing ninth out of 16 teams at the CUW Invitational back on September 14. The women's team placed seventh in the same meet, with Julie Carroll and Sydney French setting personal records.

TENNIS (6-5, 6-5)

Wednesday: vs. St. Francis (Ill.) (3-1), 3:30 p.m.

After clinching a spot in the conference tournament last week, Tennis wraps up the fall season with a rescheduled non-conference match against St. Francis. The Joliet school competes as a member of NAIA and is 3-1 on the season. BenU fell to the Fighting Saints 7-2 last season.

MEN'S GOLF

Sunday: Benedictine University Eagle Invite, 12:00 p.m.

Men's golf will host its first home event of the season on Sunday, as the Benedictine University Fall Invite was canceled back on September 15. The event will take place at Seven Bridges Golf Course off of Route 53 in Woodridge. The Eagles placed 10th out of 14 in the event at Seven Bridges last season, with Kanwer Sarkaria shooting a 39 (+3) in the nine-hole event.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Saturday-Monday: NACC Championships

Women's golf will compete in the biggest event of the season this coming weekend: The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championships at Trappers Turn Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Last year's conference championships took place in Jordan, Minnesota, with the Eagles placing second out of nine teams.
