ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Benedictine University football team overcame a slow start to pick up a 30-13 road win at Rockford University.
Both teams could not muster much offense in the first quarter but Benedictine was able to strike first early in the second. A penalty allowed Benedictine to open a drive with solid field position and four plays later
Greg Simms opened the scoring with a two-yard plunge. Rockford immediately answered with a touchdown drive, but
Colin Kanehl blocked the extra point to keep Benedictine ahead.
Brendan Goler booted a 28-yard field goal with just 5:34 left in the first half to extend the lead to 10-6. Goler's field goal marked the first three of 23 unanswered points which allowed Benedictine to put the game away.
Benedictine opened the second half with a time consuming 10-play drive which was capped when
Cyle Schultz hooked up with Sims on a six-yard pass. A healthy dose of
Michael McNulty on the ensuing drive furthered the lead. McNulty carried six times on a seven-play drive which featured all running plays, finding the endzone on a three yard run. McNulty scored again at the start of the fourth after carrying eight times on a nine-play drive.
McNulty finished with 173 yards on the ground on 31 carries. Benedictine racked up 261 yards rushing in the victory.
Artie Monaco also carried 12 times as the Eagles amassed 56 rushing attempts. The Eagles forced three turnovers in the victory with two fumbles and an interception.
Dylan Rose and
Jarrett Lecas collected seven stops apiece. Lecas notched an interception.
Benedictine (4-2, 2-1) returns home on October 26 to face Wisconsin Lutheran.
